Four
New Courses in Co-operative Management Announced for UVic's Continuing
Studies Programme
|
On
16 October in the University of Victoria Student Society's Michele
Pujol Room, Minister for Community Development, Co-operatives, and
Volunteers Jenny Kwan announced her support and Provincial government
funding for the development of four courses in Co-operative Management.
The courses, to be offered through UVic's Division of Continuing
Studies, are slated to begin September 2001 and will be available
on the Internet. The courses are: Foundations in Co-operative Studies;
Developing the Co-operative Enterprise; Managing a Co-operative
Enterprise; and, Issues facing the Co-operative Movement.
The courses are being designed to build upon each other, and together
will form the programme for Co-operative Management. However, the
courses will also stand alone and may be taken individually by those
people with specific needs or interests.
As the courses are being written, care is being taken by course
developers to solicit from co-op practitioners what information
should be included in each of them.
In order to introduce these courses to people living in many different
circumstances and locations, the courses will be flexible. They
will also be modifiable, so that they are sensitive to the different
cultural and socio-economic circumstances of the students enrolled
in them.
Students who successfully complete the four courses will become
Associates of BCICS, adding to the growing number of individuals
linked to the Institute.
The concept for the certificate programme was developed through
the leadership of Sandra Mark (Community Venture Development Services),
with the assistance and support of Rhordon Wikkramatileke (Program
Director, Continuing Studies), Dean Wes Koczka (Cont. Studies),
and Dr. Ian MacPherson (BCICS). This group was also instrumental
in securing the funding from the Ministry. |
