BCICS: Helping Shape Co-operative Studies
  "This is like a dream for me," reflects Dr. Ian MacPherson when he talks about the British Columbia Institute for Co-operative Studies (BCICS). MacPherson, the Institute's director, has studied and been involved in co-ops for nearly thirty-five years. Four New Courses in Co-operative Management Announced for UVic's Continuing Studies Programme
  On 16 October in the University of Victoria Student Society's Michele Pujol Room, Minister for Community Development, Co-operatives, and Volunteers Jenny Kwan announced her support and Provincial government funding for the development of four courses in Co-operative Management. The courses, to be offered through UVic's Division of Continuing Studies, are slated to begin September 2001 and will be available on the Internet. [Full Story]

Sointula Report
  A team of four BCICS researchers traveled this summer to Sointula, situated on beautiful Malcolm Island north east of Alert Bay. Home of the province's oldest extant consumer co-op, Sointula is one of the Coastal communities hit hardest by the drastic changes to the fishing and forest industries. [Full Story]

Co-ops Provide Options for Canada's First Nations Peoples
  There are over 130 co-operatives in Canada with memberships that are either totally or predominantly aboriginal. Over seventy of them are in the Northern regions of Canada and their memberships are largely Inuit or Inuvialuit. [Full Story]

NASCO Conference a Goldmine of Co-op Resources
  BCICS researchers Ryan George and Laura Sjolie attended the North American Students for Co-operation (NASCO) conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan 4-5 November, 2000. They took from the conference a tremendous amount of information relevant to the co-operative sector in BC. [Full Story]

Student Co-op Club a First for UVic
   UVic has a well-earned reputation as a haven for political activism, and the first stated purpose of UVic Student's Society's is "to organize students on a democratic, cooperative basis in advancing students' interests, and advancing the interests of the students' community."   [Full Story]

UVic's Environmental Law Centre and BCICS: Telling the Story of BC's Forestry and Fishing Co-ops
  In the conventional resource extraction industries which have formed the economic backbone to so many areas of the Province, a controversial issue is that control of the industries, and hence the fate of the small towns that depend on them, is held outside of the communities.   [Full Story]
