  •  The Institute welcomed its newest member, Celia Elise Haythornthwaite, born at home on 19 October to researchers Lloy Wylie and Gabe Haythornthwaite. Celia is a second daughter to Lloy and Gabe, a sister to Sophia.

  •  BCICS is pleased to have Kyla Zachary as our work study student as a Publication Production Assistant. The recent UBC graduate (B.Sc., Food Sciences major) is presently enrolled in Humanities at UVic. At UBC Kyla was the editor of both the AgUS newsletter and the Faculty of Agriculture Annual.

  • In December we welcomed Barbara Provan as our new secretary. Barbara comes to us from the Anthropology Department. Linda Dragert, our previous Secretary, returned to the Student Employment, where she took on the position of Recruitment Co-ordinator. BCICS is grateful for Linda's dedication and efforts in helping to get BCICS started.

  •  The researchers at the Institute may know and love co-ops, but we are lost without someone to ensure our computers work the way we think they should. Greg Newton filled this role as the Institute's webmaster since April. However, as a person with a young family, a full-time job elsewhere and a full course load, he passed the torch to someone with more time: Chris Pritchard, a person with a new family, a full course load, and another part-time job.

  •  Meghan Flynn, recent UVic B.Sc graduate and researcher for the Boreal Centre for Conservation Enterprise, a non-profit society that promotes the growth of the Non-Timber Forest Products sector borrowed space from the Institute, from August to December. Conducting market research as part of a detailed market assessment of the botanical forest products (BFP) sector relevant to the Peace River region, In order to determine the viability of organising a co-operative and shared-use facility for processing BFPs in the Moberly Lake area. Meghan also used her findings to produce brochures and a website for the BCCE. As if that wasn't enough, Meghan found herself roped into data entry for the Institute. To her surprise, she "caught the co-op bug"- so look for her in a BFP co-op in the future....

  • The majority of the researchers at BCICS are students, or recent graduates. Because of this, the staff is constantly changing, as students come, or graduate and move on, or just get a good price on a flight to Cuba. We would like to acknowledge the excellent work of all who have worked for us in the past, and the work of those who are continuing to work at the Institute, as well as those who are new to the centre.

  •  Research in Cuba: Samara Brock and Sol Kinnis are currently involved in research in Havana Cuba, under the auspice of CIDA. Samara, a UVic graduate of History and Environmental Studies, is involved in urban agriculture activities there, and Sol, a BCICS researcher and Urban Geography major at UVic, is doing community mapping. Because of their interest in Co-operatives, BCICS is sponsoring both of them to conduct research on co-operatives in the neighbourhoods they visit while in Cuba.
