Two Libraries Receive Collection of Noted Co-operator
  When Ingalill Saxena contacted the BC Institute for Co-operative Studies to ask its director, Ian MacPherson, if the Institute would be interested in acquiring the collection of books and papers of her late husband, Dr. Suren K. Saxena, MacPherson was elated by her offer and over the next few months ironed out the details with UVic; in late 2000 he was able to confirm with Mrs. Saxena that BCICS in partnership with the University of Victoria would offer a secure home for Dr. Saxena's books and papers. 'Co-ops Mean Business' Conference to Showcase Provincial Co-op Movement
  The British Columbia Institute for Co-operative Studies will host the 'Co-ops Mean Business' conference 31 May-2 June 2001. The conference will bring together co-operators from across the province, and from many different industries and sectors, to discuss how co-operatives are being used to maintain economic health while deepening the roots of social responsibility.[Full Story]


From Cape Breton to Victoria: Dr. Greg MacLeod speaks to UVic about Co-operatives & CED
  Building on a long tradition of East Coasters traveling to the West Coast to teach about co-operatives, Dr. Greg MacLeod came to the University of Victoria 1 March to give a series of lectures on how people living in various settings have organised co-operatively, and in doing so how they have regained control over their economic destiny. Students Discuss Need for Housing Co-ops
  On 22 March 2001, UVic's co-op club, The Co-operators, hosted a student housing co-operative symposium in the University's Student Union Buildb> The symposium was facilitated by Ryan George, and introduced by Dr. Ian MacPherson. Eric Guetschoff, West Coast Development Officer for North American Students for Co-operation (NASCO) gave a short history of the student co-operative movement, and the development of NASCO. Kootenay Film & Video Co-op Filming Co-operative Activities in West Kootenays
  During their recent visit to Nelson, researchers from BCICS were delighted to witness members of the Kootenay Film and Video Co-operative (KFVC) out in action. Filmmakers Robert Irving and Jef Wonnenberg spent two days chronicling the stories and faces of the vibrant and diverse co-op community on film. [Full Story]


Four More Years !!!
  BCICS, now just over a year old, has made a very good beginning. Twenty research projects have been, or are nearing completion; our list of published research is growing quickly; nearly thirty students, most of them involved in graduate studies, have received training as they have worked within the Institute, six of them from the Faculty of Law, meaning that they will have a heightened understanding of co-operatives as they pursue their careers. BCICS Website Charts Progress of BC's Co-op Legislation
  The British Columbia Institute of Co-operative Studies Website now has a British Columbia Co-operative Legislation Index. This section of the BCICS site provides clearly researched links to relevant legislation pertaining to Co-operatives and Credit Unions in the province of British Columbia and the rest of Canada. Website Update
  A new feature on BCICS web site is a form that lets visitors add their names to the Anthill mailing list.
This interactive feature has been introduced as a way to better streamline the distribution of hardcopy and e-mail versions of the Anthill. [Full Story]
