Students Discuss Need for Housing Co-ops
On 22 March 2001 UVic's co-op club The Co-operators hosted a student housing co-operative symposium in the University's Student Union Building.

The symposium was facilitated by Ryan George, and introduced by Dr. Ian MacPherson. Eric Guetschoff, West Coast Development Officer for North American Students for Co-operation (NASCO) gave a short history of the student co-operative movement, and the development of NASCO.

Jill Hurd, Associate Director of Housing, Apartment, and Community Living at University of California, Santa Barbara spoke about the importance of building relationships between a core group of students, administrators, and student societies when starting a housing co-op. As a University administrator herself, Hurd has dealt with many student-run co-op housing units, and was able to offer advice to prospective co-op founders.

Sol Kinnis, member of the recently incorporated Solid Roofs and Autonomous Roots housing co-op in Victoria spoke of the challenges of incorporating a new co-op, as well as the philosophy behind her co-op's decision to work with a Land Trust in Vancouver. Her presentation struck a chord with many, and for twenty minutes after her presentation she answered questions about forming a housing co-op. This suggests interest for affordable housing is a concern for students.

Earlier that day, Eric, Jill, and Ryan met with Gavin Quiney and Steve Fitterer of UVic's Housing, Food, and Conference Services, as well as Kari Worton, Director of Academics for the UVSS, to discuss the possibility of University support for a student-run housing co-operative. The meeting was instructive, and initiated a supportive relationship, which may reflect a positive climate for student housing co-operatives within the University Administration.
