BCICS Hitting the Airwaves

Starting on May 4th, 2006, BCICS will be broadcasting Each for All: The Co-operative Connection, a weekly half-hour radio show on CFUV 101.9 FM in Victoria. Listeners everywhere can catch the broadcast online at www.cfuv.uvic.ca.

Each for All will broadcast every Thursday afternoon at 1 pm and will be hosted by Robin Puga, BCICS Technology Director, and Eryk Martin, BCICS researcher. They will be assisted by the BCICS production team of Christopher Luft, Joy Emmanuel, and Sol Kinnis.

"We will tackle an issue related to co-operatives each month, developing the topic over four shows," explains Puga. "The first month is going to be Co-ops 101-an introduction to the co-op model and co-operative movement. Following that is an exciting month of shows on the credit union movement."

Interviews with BCICS Director Ian MacPherson will be featured in the first two shows, while weeks three and four will feature interviews with people from the co-op movement in Victoria.

"Our show is an educational tool," says Puga. "We plan to syndicate the program to many other campus and commnity radio stations."

Each for All will have its own website where listeners can download podcasts of all the broadcasts, as well as supplemental information pertaining to the topic of each show-including links, extended interviews and more. The Each for All website can be viewed at http://bcics.uvic.ca/radio/

Rolling Out the Canadian Social Economy Hub

Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, this five-year research project is a collaboration between practitioners and research centres across the country. The Hub is situated at the University of Victoria and is sponsored by the B.C. Institute for Co-operative Studies in partnership with the Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet). The Hub project officer functions in both official languages. Over the next few years the CSEHub website (http://www.socialeconomyhub.ca) will be stocked with a wealth of documents on the social economy. The website will provide links to all of the major contributors to the discussions on the Social Economy in Canada and Internationally. See the article here.

BCICS Successful in New Grant Applications to Support our Work

BCICS just received $49,785.00 in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to carry forward our Initiatives in the New Economy work. This Public Outreach grant will allow us to do workshops, presentations, and create resource tools to promote the findings of our earlier research. (See page 5 for more information on the project)

BCICS has also received 2 major grant contributions to support our efforts in hosting the Co-operatives and the Pursuit of Peace Conference. We were successful with our SSHRC application for $24,845.00 and the International Development and Research Council has contributed another $10,000.00. We anticipate more funding will come in.
